NICHE 2006 - Best Practices in the Care of Older Adults
November 6 & December 4

NICHE stands for
Nurses Improving Care for Health System Elders

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The NICHE model of care provides evidence-based tools to assist caregivers in meeting the specific needs of the elder population, with the goal of improving patient outcomes, safety and quality of life; using methods for the hospitalized elderly patient that
can ultimately be carried over to the home, clinic or nursing home/assisted living setting.

This three-day NICHE workshop is designed to enhance the knowledge, skills and attitudes of nurses who care for older adults. Teaching techniques will include lecture, case studies, small group discussion and demonstrations of geriatric assessment techniques. Contact hours from this course can be used towards ANCC Gerontological Nurse Certification.

NICHE stands for
Nurses Improving Care for Health System Elders

NICHE:
The program was started in 1992 by the Hartford Institute, to not only increase the public’s awareness of issues pertaining to the elderly, but to provide nurses caring for them with the best and most innovative knowledge and skills to do so.

Nationally, there are 186 hospitals in the United States and Canada, and one hospital in The Netherlands, participating in the NICHE program. Virginia Mason began its program in 2000 and was the first medical center in Washington state to have such a program.

GRN: The NICHE program proposes the Geriatric Nurse model of elder care. Nurses attend educational workshops, like this one, to learn about the current Best Nursing Practices in the Care of Older Adults. Upon completion of the workshop series, participants agree to modify their nursing practice to reflect evidence-based best practices in the care of elders, and to serve as resources for other nurses, nursing assistants, physicians and other health care workers in their home hospital units and/or clinics.
