COURSE DESCRIPTION: This conference will address issues common in the care of critically ill adult patients. Through lectures and case presentations, presenters will focus on the best in evidence-based resources and the most current thinking in the field reflecting changes in practice patterns. This course is designed for nurses, respiratory care practitioners and other health care professionals who provide care in the critical care setting.

- Compare and contrast the two types of delirium that patients experience in the ICU
- Describe four forms of communication in the ICU
- Describe ways to discern the best communication pathway for your situation
- Describe three situations when EtCO² monitoring can make a difference
- Discuss three situations that can be detected with EtCO² monitoring during mechanical ventilation
- Discuss the role of EBUS (Endobronchial Ultrasound) and Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy
- Describe the benefits and indications for minimally invasive lung surgery
- Discuss the purpose of tracheostomies
- Describe variables in tracheostomy care
- Describe the potential benefits of therapeutic hypothermia after cardiac arrest
- Discuss potential side effects of therapeutic hypothermia
- Discuss the need and opportunity to improve families’ experience of care in the ICU through personal reflection
- List system changes that will improve families’ experience of care provided in the ICU
